Chile: development of a symbolic public space in Vallenar
This public space – an important facility for the population in this area – owes its name to the Cruz de Mayo religious celebrations that are held every year in the month of May. Multiple dance associations in the district, in the provinces of Huasco, Copiapó, and Caldera, and in more distant cities such as Calama and Coquimbo, attend the festivities.
The project included conducting excavation work, building retaining walls, pouring concrete, developing green spaces, and installing flooring tiles and urban furnishings – stands, play structures for children, fitness equipment, shelters, benches, trash bins, water fountains, and lamp-posts over an area covering 9,537 square metres.
The project also called for upgrading the reinforced concrete grotto that offers a panoramic view of the city of Vallenar and the river Huasco.
In addition, in June 2017, Bitumix began reconstruction work on the cross. After removing the original structure, Bitumix poured concrete for the main pillar.
The next edition of “Fiesta Cruz de Mayo” will be held in a newly and fully redeveloped environment, to the delight of all participants.
