Raising awareness of accident risks among new hires
On worksites, new recruits face greater risk with respect to accidents. In 2003, Eurovia observed that accident risk is 6 times higher, statistically, in the first of employment than it is 3 years later and that new recruits are involved in more accidents by a four-fold factor than their more experienced counterparts on average. Eurovia systemized its “First Day” training program, which deals with general occupational risk and specific worksite risks and includes a knowledge evaluation test; as a result, the incidence of worksite accidents dropped from 120 to 30 in the first year. In 2007, this initiative was extended to the recruitment of temporary personnel and to other Company business lines, including quarries, demolition sites, and laboratories. It has also been deployed in Germany, North America, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. Since its inception, 32,000 tests have been delivered to new hires and nearly 9,500 to temporary personnel.
