The third light-rail line in Grenoble, which links the municipalities of Seyssins, Seyssinet-Pariset, Grenoble, Saint-Martin d'Hères and Gières, was opened in May 2006. With its 13.5 km of new track and 26 stations, it serves 16% of the population living and working in the greater urban area, as well as the university campus. The Grenoble division of Eurovia Alpes was lead company in the project consortium. The Eurovia teams built the facade to facade infrastructure, outside the rails, from earthworks to rainwater and wastewater networks, signalling, public lighting and asphalt mix application.
To comply with required milestones and to maintain traffic on public and private streets at all times, a special organisational structure was set up. Experienced teams from the Grenoble division were reinforced with teams and equipment from other regional entities - Eurovia Lyon, Eurovia Bourg-en-Bresse, Eurovia Montmélian, Smag, Perino Bordone-Sassi BTP and Jouanny SN. Co-contractor companies Carron SAS, EVD and Biasini carried out earthworks, green space development and street development respectively.
On this large-scale project, the company also made a point of hiring people having difficulty finding work, in accordance with the special clause applying to contractors. Eurovia hired through the "major worksite" cell set up by the urban community and also set up a training centre near the worksite to provide new recruits with the basics of the activity, such as safety measures and the various types of works. It is worth noting that Eurovia was the first company in the region to sign a Cared (Contrats d'aide et de retour à l'emploi durable - support and return to long-term work) contract with the Rhone-Alpes Regional Council, in which it undertook to support 24 job-seekers whose training was co-financed by the region. With nearly 20 light-rail projects completed or under way, Eurovia is now the French leader in the sector. Building on Eurovia's capabilities and expertise, Eurovia Alpes has made the Grenoble light-rail project an exemplary case study in mobilisation and coordination.
