A2 motorway in Poland: toward Euro 2012
On July 28, 2011, a consortium consisting of Eurovia Polska (lead contractor)
and Warbud (VINCI Construction) signed a contract to build section A of the A2
motorway. This dual two-lane, 30-km segment represents the first section of
the motorway that will connect Stryków (north of Lódz) and Konotopa (west of
Warsaw); subsequently, the motorway will extend farther west from Warsaw to
Poznan and then Berlin. To the east, the A2 will lead to the border with Belarus,
then on to Moscow. The project includes an environmental component: in addition
to the construction of multiple passageways for animals, the consortium will
build a storm water filtration system and install numerous noise-attenuation
barriers. Eurovia Polska will conduct all excavation activities on this project as
well as some structural components (culverts) and paving; Warbud will build the
engineering structures. The project is operating at full blast with 2,500 employees
working 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
Every day, 30,000 m² of earth fill is produced, cresting at 40,000 m², and
over 6,000 tonnes of asphalt is poured. A record for a project of this type!
To ensure on-time delivery, the current pace will be maintained till the project is
completed. The motorway will be operational in June 2012, just in time for Euro
2012, the European Football Championship, allowing fans to travel throughout
Poland. The project as a whole will be completed next October.
