Building light-rail transit systems

Since the re-emergence of light-rail transit (LRT) systems, Eurovia’s 20 or so past and current LRT projects since 2000 have helped to make the Company, through its subsidiary ETF-Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires, the leader in this sector.

Since the rebirth of light-rail transit systems, Eurovia has taken part in most LRT projects in France. Bordeaux, Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Grenoble, Le Mans, Orléans, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Mulhouse, Nantes, Nice, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Strasbourg, Toulouse and many other projects in the Ile-de-France region: with approximately 20 LRT projects since 2000, Eurovia, through its subsidiary ETF-Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires, the leader today in this sector. Its expertise encompasses all construction phases in building effective LRT systems.

Building a light-rail system: Eurovia’s expertise at a glance

  • Worksite organization and coordination to mitigate nuisance factors for users and ensure favourable living conditions for residents.

  • Continuous management of development works: excavation; sanitation; underground networks; concrete foundation; and adjacent structures (sidewalks and roads).

  • Integration of the light-rail system into its surroundings: platform surface course; different surface course to distinguish between platforms, pavers, strips, grass, noise-attenuation barriers.

  • Implementation of customized solutions.

  • Design and implementation of high-performance structures: Bétonpact®, concrete made from compacted cement designed for high-use industrial surfaces and roads such as urban infrastructure; or Renfovia®, a paving solution designed for the construction of infrastructure subjected to intense heavy-vehicle traffic.

  • Installation of tracks and catenary wires by the specialized teams at ETF-Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires.

Eurovia builds the first light-rail line in Brest

In March 2010, Eurovia Bretagne launched the project to build the first light-rail line for Brest Métropole Océane. The project will be carried out entirely by a consortium that brings together the divisions of Eurovia Bretagne associated with ETF-Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires and two local companies. Works include: roadwork, civil engineering, urban development, rail lines and related infrastructure.

The first light-rail line, which will enter into service in mid 2012, will include 27 stations. At 14.3 km in length, the rail line will cross the city from east to west, linking major residential and business areas.

Tramway for Marseille

Marseilles light-rail transit (LRT) system

In July 2005, Eurovia Méditerranée was mandated to oversee construction of all infrastructure, including roads and sidewalks, required for a light-rail transit system in Marseilles.

The worksite covered an area bounded by Cannebière, cours Belsunce, rue Colbert, and rue de la République. Line 1 was inaugurated on February 27, 2007. Eurovia also took part in building Line 2 of the Marseilles LRT; work was completed in autumn 2008.

Tramway for Grenoble

Line 3 of the Grenoble LRT

Line 3 of the Grenoble light-rail transit system, which connects on an east-west line the communes of Seyssins, Seyssinet-Pariset, Grenoble, Saint-Martin d'Hères and Gières, was entered into service in May 2006. With its 13.5 km of new tracks and 26 stations, it can serve up to 16% of the city's population as well as the university campus.

Eurovia Alpes, through its division in Grenoble, led the construction consortium. Eurovia teams built the façade-to-façade infrastructure beyond the tracks; their work included earthworks, storm and sanitation sewers, signs and markings, public lighting, and paving.

To comply with project milestones and allow traffic to flow on public streets and private roads at all times, a special structure was set up. Experienced teams from the Grenoble division were assisted by teams and equipment from other regional entities, namely, Eurovia Lyon, Eurovia Bourg-en-Bresse, Eurovia Montmélian, Smag, Perino Bordone-Sassi BTP and Jouanny SN. Co-contractors Carron SAS, EVD and Biasini carried out earthworks, green space development and roadwork, respectively.

On this large-scale project, Eurovia recruited people who had difficulty finding work, in accordance with a special clause applying to contractors. In addition to recruitment through its "major worksite" cell set up by the urban community, Eurovia established a training centre near the worksite to provide new recruits with basic knowledge, such as safety measures and the various types of worksite activities. It is worth noting that Eurovia was the first company in the region to sign a Cared contract (Contrats d'aide et de retour à l'emploi durable, an initiative designed to promote workplace reintegration) with the Rhone-Alpes regional council to support 24 job-seekers whose training was co-funded by regional authorities.

Thanks to Eurovia Alpes, the Grenoble LRT initiative is a beacon project in terms of effective mobilization and coordination.

Tramway for Lyon

Extending Line T1 of the Lyons LRT

In autumn 2005, Eurovia delivered the T1 LRT line extension connecting stations at Perrache and Musée Confluence. On this project, Eurovia worked closely with its Czech subsidiary, SSZ, which specializes in track-laying.

The Léa LRT line was inaugurated in December 2006.

Eurovia built all concrete infrastructure from Part-Dieu to Lacassagne, refurbished boulevard de la Villette as well as intersections of the track laid on ballast from Lyons to Meyzieu, and built a bicycle path made with honey-coloured porous paving.

Eurovia teams also took part on two Line T4 projects, involving the track and façade-to-façade works on the north side.
